In 1529, a group of families belonging to an Otomi population called Nopala, who lived in the province of Jilotepec, set out for the area of La Cañada, in what is now the state of Querétaro. This area was inhabited by Chichimeca groups with whom the native leader of the group, named Conín, maintained a friendship and exchanged animal skins that the locals traded for salt and grains.

A majestic site with wide open spaces, numerous ballcourts and bas-reliefs, and particularly impressive for the Pyramid of the Niches, with its 365 niches, El Tajín has long been a source of fascination to specialists in Mesoamerican calendar systems and world view.

At the time of the equinoxes, the shadow of Kukulkan, the serpent, descends from its temple to fertilize the earth, while the red jaguar is hidden in the Temple of the Warriors, with its jade spots glowing. This ancient capital city has been declared a World Heritage Site.

This monumental former monastery was founded by the Dominican Order and built by indigenous Tepoztecans. Valuable mural paintings are preserved inside. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, as one of the earliest sixteenth-century monasteries on the slopes of Popocatepetl.

An impressive construction notable for the church’s remarkable Mudejar-style coffered ceiling made with gilded wood. The museum preserves the pre-Hispanic and viceregal history of Tlaxcala—a vital ally for the Conquistadors—along with displays of nineteenth and twentieth-century luxury objects and tools.
