The site comprises 244 islands, islets and coastal areas that are located in the Gulf of California in north-eastern Mexico. The site is home to 695 plant species and 891 of fish; has a striking natural beauty in a dramatic setting formed by rugged islands with high cliffs and sandy beaches, which contrast with the brilliant reflection from the desert and the surrounding turquoise waters.

With a unique landscape on the Pacific coast of Mexico, bordered by hills, this major port bore witness to a number of foreign invasions. Its buildings from the 19th century preserve a good part of the history of the region and present unique qualities.

Winding streets and adobe buildings characterize what was once one of the most important mining towns in the north of New Spain: Cosalá. Its ancient churches form a striking presence in the natural mountainous landscape.

An extraordinary testimony to the ancient inhabitants, unique not only because of the beach location, but because of the more than 700 rock carvings on volcanic boulders. The motifs of plants, flowers, animals and geometric figures are undamaged by the sea.

Housed in a mansion from the Porfiriato period, since 1989 the museum has shown temporary fine art exhibitions and a large collection of pre-Hispanic pieces from the indigenous peoples of Sinaloa, particularly fine pottery and human terracotta figures.
