Instrumental and vocal ensembles, as well as soloists, perform bolero. This element is practiced and transmitted in family, neighborhood, community, and social settings, and is expressed through codes of conduct and styles of dress. Its bearers assume different roles, from writing to performing and dancing. Bolero is a hallmark of identity and a way of expressing emotions and feelings. It is a key element in secular and religious celebrations. It is also a source of income for professional artists. Its presence in Latin America and Spanish-speaking countries around the world, through radio and film, is a testament to its popularity.
The bolero is an indispensable element of Latin American sentimental song, with a strong lyrical character deeply rooted in Cuba and Mexico. As a cultural melting pot, it combines the language used in European poetry, the African rhythms of slaves, and the feelings of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Bolero lyrics refer to everyday life and the songs are performed in a variety of contexts: from homes to public spaces and large concert halls, at festivals and as serenades.
The practice is generally transmitted orally and by imitation within families. Researchers and academics (historians, musicologists, and cultural leaders) also participate in its transmission. Today, new boleros continue to be composed, whose lyrics and music engage in an ever-evolving dialogue with the tradition of both countries.
The prestige of the bolero and its appropriation by different segments of the population have naturally led to its expansion in Latin America and other Spanish-speaking countries. As an important cultural symbol for much of Cuban and Mexican society, especially in urban areas, the bolero is a vehicle for emotions and feelings.
