Huacuri Quitenie

Huacuri Quitenie

Route element
Huacuri Quitenie

It includes eight sacred sites. It is considered the fourth gate of the route and marks the formal entrance to the sacred territory of Wirikuta.

It comprises a group of hills that form part of two small mountain ranges: the Sierra del Bozal, to the northeast, and the Sierra Picacho del Tunalillo, to the southeast, separated by a mountain pass.

The hills feature rocky areas with patches of holm oak, while the mountain pass is home to xerophytic scrubland, with mesquite trees (Prosopis laevigata) and huizaches (Acacia farnesiana), as well as izote (Yucca), agaves such as sotol (Dasylirion sp.) and lechuguilla (Agave lechuguilla).

Considered the fourth gate, it is of great importance as it marks the entrance to the sacred temple of Huiricuta. At this threshold are the five most important ancestral guardians, known as ehuatametes. Each one corresponds to a particular direction. They are ancestral deities, cacauyaris, of great power and hierarchy; at the same time, they are guardians, judges, and guides. They observe the passage of pilgrims and judge whether they have fulfilled all their obligations. They have the power to see the lineage and history of each pilgrim. The figure of the south governs the threshold and the figure of the north is the judge. This threshold is located between Huahuatsari, the governor of the south, and Ututahui, the judge and elder who cares for the water, in the north. To the west is Tutuhaucu, and to the east is Tsipuxahui Tamatsi Paritsica, the deer. In the central area is the deity Pitsiteca, the ehuatamete of the center.

The jicareros purify themselves at this gate. Novices are blindfolded before entering, and once they pass through the gate, the blindfold is removed. This step is considered particularly difficult. The deities who dwell here are very demanding and require that the jicareros fulfill their promises and behave as they should. If they do not, they will be punished; but if they fulfill their obligations, they will receive great blessings and visions. From this point on, pilgrims find themselves inside the sacred temple of Huiricuta (Huiricuta pariya tauta).
