Intermittent lagoon considered a sacred site. Its cyclical behavior reinforces its spiritual value.
It is a flat area of an intermittent lagoon at an altitude of 2,000 m, within the Altiplano of San Luis Potosí. The lagoon is dry most of the year, except during the rainy season from July to September. Even today, its waters are very shallow. This property consists of a single natural sacred site.
Currently, during the Jicuri Neixa festival, the jicareros dance in the courtyards of their ceremonial centers and are spiritually transported to this place. During the pilgrimage, the jicara bearers visit this site. When there is water in the lagoon, the pilgrims take holy water from it.
According to the narrative of the first pilgrimage, this intermittent lagoon is the courtyard where the cacauyaris or ancestral deities danced for the first time the dance that is performed at the peyote festival, Jicuri Neixa. This celebration takes place in May and is associated with the cleaning and preparation of the cornfield for planting. Since this is where the ancestral deities danced for the first time, the ground of the lagoon appears to be white.
