Huahuatsari
Route element
Huahuatsari
Located on a large plateau in the municipality, together with Cuhixu Uheni, they mark the north and south of the third ceremonial gate on the route.
It is a small hill with an approximate altitude of 2,350 m, covered with xerophytic scrub, located on the eastern edge of the Zacatecas Altiplano. Together with Cuixu Uheni, they constitute the northern and southern elements of the Third Gate.
Before arriving at this site, the jicareros are purified. They grind tobacco and prepare a small bag, which they place in one of their ritual tobacco jugs, or yacuais. The pilgrimage guides roast the tobacco on a small griddle while the novices sleep and put it in their patsari, an embroidered bag, to take it back to their communities in the Sierra. There, it will later be burned at the Jicuri Neixa, the peyote festival. This ceremony, which takes place in May, is associated with the preparation of the land before the planting season. The elders sing a nenehuieri, a story about the origin of the ancestral deities.
