Museo Casa del Dr. José María Luis Mora
This museum traces the history of Comonfort, Guanajuato, and its indigenous heritage, which is reflected in the layout of its streets, its popular festivals, and its traditions.
This museum is housed in an 18th-century residence, one of the finest examples of the town’s architecture, where, in 1794 (when Comonfort was still known as Chamacuero), José María Luis Mora was born—a distinguished writer and liberal politician who helped enact the Reform Laws of 1833. The single-story building with a simple façade houses a collection consisting of objects from the viceregal period (such as looms, spinning wheels, paintings, books, and documents) and archaeological artifacts made of stone and ceramics (anthropomorphic figurines, pots, polychrome bowls, and obsidian knives). Although the agreement between the Comonfort municipal government and the National Institute of Anthropology and History was signed on March 5, 1979, the museum did not open its doors until December 1989.
