The agricultural hacienda of La Inmaculada Concepción de Palmitos de Arriba is located in the Palmitos Valley, in the present-day state of Durango. It was an important site along the itinerary of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, serving as a resting place for travelers heading from the city of Durango to the silver mines of San José de Parral and vice versa.

Following the initial explorations, this site became part of the efforts of Franciscan missionaries to evangelize the northern territories of New Spain. By 1622, there were twenty Spanish settlers living in the Palmitos area. However, the population dwindled in 1631 after the discovery of the mines in Parral.
The lands of the hacienda of Palmitos produced a large quantity of wheat, which motivated the establishment of a flour mill in this place since the 16th century. Among the notable buildings within the hacienda of La Inmaculada Concepción de Palmitos de Arriba is the chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which was completed in November 1856 according to an inscription found on a medallion in the ceiling of the choir loft. The building was constructed in stone and has a cross-shaped floor plan. The interior features great height and is covered with arched vaults; it has a peraltada (raised) oval drum dome, providing ample natural lighting.
