Cuyuxquihui

A Totonac city founded 800 years ago, its emergence coincides with the fall of El Tajín. Giving the impression of a fortified site, it was important in the region until it was conquered by Moctezuma Ilhuicamina around 1465. Its pyramid beside a cliff and its great ballcourt are models of austerity and strength.

The settlement maintained an important status in the region until it was conquered by the Mexica under the command of Moctezuma Ilhuicamina in 1465. The site is one of several which were founded after the city of El Tajín was abandoned. Since there were various migratory movements, the fortified appearance of the architectural structures at Cuyuxquihui is interpreted as a response to armed conflict between certain of the migrating groups.
