Route element
Cupuri Mutiú

A small wetland located on the outskirts of Jerez. It is considered a sacred site due to its connection with water, a key element for fertility and life.

This site retains its sacred quality for the Huichol people, who continue to visit it with the same respect to perform the rituals of the pilgrimage. It maintains its meaning and ritual importance.

During the pilgrimage, the jicareros are purified and blessed here. Offerings are left at this site and messages are sent to the pilgrims.

Here, a Huichol myth is described in which a spring originated when an ancestral deity (cacauyari) spilled water from his gourd. A snake woman (cutehui) lives there, and it is remembered that in the original pilgrimage many snakes accompanied the journey, later remaining in springs and underground streams. In the Huichol worldview, each spring or body of water is linked to a serpent being, which acts as a guardian or spirit of the place.
