Dedicated to Saint James the Greater, this 18th-century cathedral is one of the most emblematic buildings in Saltillo and the tallest in northern Mexico.
Catedral de Saltillo
Abstract
Its construction began in 1745 and was completed in 1800, receiving its official designation as a cathedral by a papal bull issued by Pope Leo XIII on June 23, 1891.
Designed by Nicolás Hernández, its architecture blends Baroque and Churrigueresque styles, with the intricate quarry stone carvings on its façade standing out.
Inside, it houses a valuable collection of approximately 45 viceregal oil paintings, important Baroque altarpieces, Solomonic columns crowned with the scallop shell of Saint James, and an 18th-century silver frontal on the altar of Saint Joseph.
