A cultural space dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and appreciation of the historical and artistic heritage of the state of Tlaxcala. It is located in the former Convent of San Francisco, in the municipality of Tepeyanco, a building of great historical significance that forms part of the architectural legacy of the first Franciscan missions established in the region during the 16th century.
This space was inaugurated in 2021 by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) with the aim of bringing the public closer to an understanding of regional history through temporary exhibitions that address various topics related to archaeology, history, art, religion, and the cultural expressions of Tlaxcala and other regions of the country. The gallery serves as a meeting point for research, heritage conservation, and the dissemination of knowledge, offering visitors an educational and cultural experience.
The Former Convent of San Francisco de Tepeyanco is one of the most important examples of New Spain convent architecture in Tlaxcala. Its construction began shortly after the conquest, when the Franciscan friars set out to evangelize the indigenous peoples. Over the centuries, the building has preserved important architectural and artistic elements, such as its church, the cloister, the monks’ former cells, corridors, courtyards, and a remarkable collection of murals that reflect the artistic and religious influence of the viceregal era.
The Exhibition Hall blends harmoniously into the convent complex, utilizing one of its historic spaces to present carefully curated exhibitions. These exhibits include archaeological artifacts, historical documents, photographs, reproductions, graphic resources, and audiovisual materials that help contextualize the historical and cultural processes related to the state of Tlaxcala. The periodic renewal of the exhibits allows the venue to maintain a dynamic cultural offering, encouraging new visits and strengthening interest in local heritage.
One of the main objectives of this space is to promote heritage education among audiences of all ages. Through guided tours, educational activities, and cultural programs, the exhibition hall seeks to spark an interest in history, foster respect for cultural heritage, and contribute to the development of a collective identity based on knowledge of the past. In this way, a visit not only provides historical information but also invites visitors to reflect on the importance of preserving monuments and cultural expressions for future generations.
The convent complex where the exhibition hall is located is of significant architectural value. Its design follows the model of the early New Spain convents, characterized by spacious atriums, chapels, cloisters, and spaces dedicated to teaching and evangelization. The murals preserved in various areas of the building constitute a valuable example of 16th-century religious art and illustrate the fusion of European traditions and indigenous cultural elements—the result of the encounter between these two cultures during the colonial era.
The San Francisco Tepeyanco Exhibition Hall also plays a significant role in the municipality’s cultural life, as it serves as a venue for academic activities, conferences, book launches, workshops, and events related to the preservation of historical heritage. These initiatives strengthen the bond between the community and its cultural heritage, while promoting cultural tourism and contributing to the region’s social development.
Visiting this space provides insight into Tepeyanco’s historical importance within the process of evangelization and the development of Tlaxcala during the viceregal period. It also offers the opportunity to appreciate a historic monument that has managed to preserve much of its architectural and artistic richness, making it a landmark for research, education, and the promotion of culture.
