El Grillo

Located in the municipality of Zapopan, within the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, its main feature is its mud architecture, typical of the buildings of the Atemajac valley. A number of tombs have also been found here.

This site is located in the municipality of Zapopan, within the metropolitan area of Guadalajara. Its history divides into two phases. The Tabachines phase was a tradition noted for shaft tombs, while the El Grillo phase (400-800 AD) saw the development of new funerary architecture in which corpses were no longer placed into shaft tombs but received box burials in graves. This was significant because the structures are typical examples of the earthen architecture of the Late Classic in the Atemajac valley, and at the same time an important number of rectangular box tombs were found in the adjacent Tabachines residential development dating to between 500 and 800 AD.
