This museum space was created to offer visitors a comprehensive overview of the historical, archaeological, and cultural richness of this important site located in the municipality of Mina, Nuevo León. Before beginning the tour of the archaeological zone, the exhibition hall provides information that helps visitors understand the context in which the region’s ancient inhabitants lived and the importance of preserving this heritage. Its main objective is to familiarize the public with the societies that inhabited northeastern Mexico thousands of years ago and to explain the significance of the archaeological evidence found at the site.

The permanent exhibition consists of informational panels, maps, illustrations, photographs, reproductions, and archaeological artifacts recovered during research conducted by specialists. These materials show what the landscape was like in ancient times, what the region’s environmental characteristics were, and how human groups utilized natural resources to survive. Through this information, visitors can learn that the ancient inhabitants were nomadic groups of hunter-gatherers who constantly moved in search of water, food, and shelter, adapting to the conditions of the desert and the mountains.

One of the main themes of the gallery is rock art, especially the petroglyphs for which Boca de Potrerillos is famous. Thousands of engravings on large rocks have been documented at the site, considered one of the most significant concentrations of this type of art in Mexico. The designs include geometric figures, spirals, circles, lines, depictions of animals, footprints, human figures, and other symbols whose meaning is still being studied. Archaeologists believe that many of these engravings may have served ceremonial, astronomical, or territorial purposes, or may have been related to the beliefs and daily lives of the groups that inhabited the region.

The gallery also explains the archaeological research process carried out at Boca de Potrerillos. It presents the techniques used to locate, document, and preserve the petroglyphs, as well as the methods employed to study the objects found during the excavations. Thanks to this work, it has been possible to learn important details about the diet, stone tools, hunting and gathering activities, migration routes, and forms of social organization of the ancient inhabitants of northeastern Mexico.

Another important aspect of the exhibition is the relationship between humans and the environment. Visitors can learn how climate, vegetation, wildlife, and water availability influenced the lives of prehistoric communities. It also explains the importance of hills, canyons, and springs as sites for temporary settlements and as places where ritual and cultural activities took place, which were captured in the petroglyphs.

In addition to disseminating scientific knowledge, the Introductory Gallery promotes the conservation of archaeological heritage. Through its exhibits, it invites visitors to respect the petroglyphs and other cultural artifacts, reminding them that these constitute a unique legacy that helps us understand the history of the earliest inhabitants of northeastern Mexico. It also highlights the importance of collaboration among researchers, institutions, and society to protect these artifacts from the passage of time and human activities that may put them at risk.
