The stretch between the Puente de La Colmena and the Ex Hacienda de la Cañada connected the towns of Tepeji del Río and Jilotepec and still retains both the original route layout and the cobblestone pavement made of round stones. This 3.5 km long route is flanked by small stone walls and large pirules (a type of tree).

The section, which was part of the shorter route to Zacatecas, presented significant transit difficulties during the rainy seasons. For this reason, three bridges were constructed: the Puente de Tlautla, the Puente de La Cañada, and the Puente de La Colmena. The latter, consisting of three semicircular arches made of cantera stone, is supported by buttresses and masonry supports.
The Hacienda La Cañada, located on the banks of the Royal Inland Road about 13 km from Tepeji del Río, Hidalgo, was a mandatory stop between this city and San Juan del Río, Querétaro. Founded in 1563, it specialized in livestock. It still maintains a well-preserved stretch of the traditional cobblestone road, primarily along Avenida Camino Real, which leads to the old estate of the hacienda.
