This city, which was a satellite of Tula, played a major role in commerce and religion. When Tula fell in the year 1000, it took its place in the eastern part of what is now the state of Morelos.
Coatetelco was built on the shore of the lake of the same name. It is a site linked to Xochicalco, although its most important period occurred during the Late Preclassic era. After Xochicalco’s hegemony, Coatetelco became the region’s main center. In the Postclassic period, it was associated with Tula, as evidenced by the presence of a Chac Mool.
