This gallery explores the presence of various religious orders in New Spain, with a special focus on the role of the Society of Jesus in the evangelization of the northwestern part of the Viceroyalty. On display are two 18th-century polychrome wood sculptures—one of Saint Christopher and the other of Christ on the cross—as well as an 18th-century oil painting of Saint John the Baptist. This gallery also features the museum’s only contemporary artwork: an oil painting by a Baja Californian artist depicting the encounter between European and Indigenous cultures in the Baja California peninsula.
