Domestic Chapel
Sala
Located on the upper floor, this space was used by the friars to celebrate mass without leaving the cloister. The carved and gilded wooden altarpiece is an original example of the Solomon-like baroque style, created by the Novohispanic artist Francisco Martínez, who was commissioned by the friars in the first half of the 18th century. The upper paintings are also by his hand, while the lower ones, anonymous and of lesser quality, were probably created by his workshop. The paintings that decorate this space portray opposite moments in the lives of Jesus and Mary: the Nativity and Circumcision of Jesus, contrasted with the Agony in the Garden and the Dolorous Virgin, creating an interesting reflection for the viewer. Both series culminate with two magnificent angels that underscore the importance of their presence in Christian cosmogony and, by extension, in religious art.
