Nace una Pelota
The exhibition “The Birth of a Ball” explores the origin, material composition, and symbolic significance of rubber balls in Olmec culture based on findings from the archaeological site of El Manatí, Veracruz (1700–900 B.C.). Through a thematic approach, the exhibition examines Mesoamerican rubber production technologies, their connection to ritual practices, and their integration into a sacred landscape. It also emphasizes the organic and highly fragile nature of the material, as well as the exceptional conditions that allowed for its preservation over more than three millennia. The exhibition also addresses contemporary conservation challenges and the use of replicas as a museographic strategy, highlighting the value of these pieces as the oldest known evidence of a ball with bouncing properties and their significance as cultural heritage.
