Catalina Guzmán. Photo Chic
The exhibition invites reflection on the past and memory, and in the case of photography, it offers insight not only into the image itself but also into its materiality, how it circulates, and its role in the daily lives of individuals and families.
In the female portraits, the intention to go beyond the image stands out, as the photographs—taken primarily of dancers—suggest empathy toward other artists who, like the photographer herself, performed their work under the public gaze.
Catalina Guzmán’s photographic work emerged at a pivotal moment in the construction of a modern, feminine, and cosmopolitan identity between 1914 and 1940, a period in which gender roles were transforming and women’s presence in public spaces was expanding.
The Photo Chic photography studio, run by Catalina Guzmán, made photography accessible to segments of the middle class who traditionally lacked the means to commission portraits, thereby helping to establish new forms of family representation.
