A Totonac settlement and important ceremonial center built high in the Sierra Madre mountains. It is distinguished by its monumental architecture, featuring the traditional niches characteristic of the region. Its ball court is one of the largest in Mesoamerica.
This Totonac city was founded 18 centuries ago on the fertile lands of the Cuetzalan region, in the present-day state of Puebla, as an outpost of El Tajín. The Totonacs occupied it until the year 800, during which time it flourished. They built extensive plazas on natural platforms, among which a rectangular one stands out. They also erected majestic pyramidal structures, one of which is remarkable because it features numerous niches, like the main building at El Tajín, and includes a ball court nearly 100 meters long.
