Museo del Templo Mayor
Lugar
It is one of the most important museums in the Mexican capital. It opened its doors on October 12, 1987 to protect the findings resulting from the archaeological excavations carried out by the Templo Mayor Project in its first season, between 1978 and 1982, which allowed the recovery of a collection of more than 7,000 objects, as well as the vestiges of the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan and some surrounding buildings. The original museum project was based on the very layout of the Templo Mayor, in which two deities were worshiped: Huitzilopochtli, solar god of war and patron of the Mexica, whose chapel was located on the south side of the building, and Tláloc, god of rain directly linked to agriculture, whose temple occupied the north side. The first four rooms are dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and in a broad sense to the war, while the last four deal with Tláloc, agriculture and the Mexica's exploitation of natural resources. For that same reason, the façade of the current museum has two covers.
