Tierra de primavera: B. Traven en la selva lacandona
The exhibition *Tierra de primavera*, written with humor and wonder, reflects Traven’s fascination with the jungle and the indigenous peoples of Chiapas. At the same time, it stands as one of the most significant visual and literary accounts of the region during the early decades of the 20th century.
The exhibition brings together photographs and reproductions created by the author himself during his journey through the Lacandon Jungle, as well as personal items that accompanied him on his travels, including a camera, a typewriter, his boots, and his signature hat.
Through his images, Traven documented the daily life of the Tzotzil, Tseltal, and Lacandon peoples, for whom he felt great admiration. His photographs reflect not only an artistic sensibility but also a critical view of the conditions of exploitation, inequality, and abuse faced by the indigenous communities of Chiapas. For him, photography was both a form of creation and a tool for social critique.
The collections on display come from the B. Traven Estate, a private collection in Mexico City, the “Dr. Eusebio Dávalos Hurtado” National Library of Anthropology and History, and the INAH National Archaeology Archive.
