Archaeological Sunset in Cuicuilco
An experience designed for all ages, aimed at introducing visitors to the archaeological heritage of Mexico’s Preclassic period.
This activity lasts approximately two hours (from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.), with a capacity limited to 30 people to ensure a safe, orderly, and high-quality experience. The tour covers a distance of approximately 1,500 meters along accessible trails.
The tour will begin promptly at 6:00 PM on the Pino Esplanade. Since this activity takes place after regular closing hours, the main entrance to the archaeological site will be opened exclusively for the pre-registered group. Once the tour begins, the entrance will be closed again, so no one will be allowed to enter after the designated time.
All activities will be conducted in accordance with the safety measures in effect in the area, and the tour will be led at all times by authorized staff.
The main objective of this experience is to understand the development of the ancient settlement of Cuicuilco, its social organization, its monumental architecture, and its significance within the Mesoamerican context, as well as to reflect on the natural events that shaped its history, particularly the eruption of the Xitle volcano.
During the visit, participants will tour various areas of the archaeological site and the on-site museum, where the following topics will be covered:
- The natural environment and available resources in the Mexico Basin during the Preclassic period.
- The growth and phases of occupation of the Cuicuilco settlement.
- The construction of the Great Platform and its architectural and social characteristics.
- The impact of the eruption of the Xitle volcano on the settlement’s fate.
- The analysis of archaeological materials such as pottery, stone tools, and figurines, as well as their importance for research.
- Cuicuilco’s relationship with other regions of Mesoamerica.
- Observation of artifacts and artistic expressions on display at the site museum.
At the end of the tour, there will be time for questions and comments. Following this, a brief summary of the topics covered will be provided, and the audience will be thanked for their participation.
