Zona arqueológica Xochicalco
An indigenous city built atop the hill of Xochicalco, likely to command a view of the surrounding landscape. The ancient inhabitants constructed walls, moats, and wide access roads to maintain complete control over its entrances.
Their knowledge of engineering, the environment, astronomy, construction, and aesthetics is evident in each of the platforms, temples, palaces, and dwellings that can still be admired at the site. This demonstrates the heritage values that led to its inscription on the World Heritage List as a cultural asset and its recognition by the indigenous communities still living in the vicinity as “The House of the Flowering of Knowledge.”
