Cuajilote
Named after a very common tree in the Totonac region, known as “chote” (Parmentiera aculeata).
A Totonac city with a 3,000 year history in a very damp location, where the buildings are very tall and the plazas and ballcourts are wide. The are indications of a cult to Tezcatlipoca, the smoky black mirror. It was a great exporter of colorful bird feathers.
About the site
Given the terrain and the quantity of water flowing through this area, the small valleys have deep and fertile soil, favoring the establishment of a trade route linking the center of Mexico with the Gulf coast. It is thought that this settlement paid tribute to the Triple Alliance, consisting of the city states of Teotihuacan, Texcoco and Tenochtitlan. These cities received great quantities of products, and bird feathers were notable among the tribute.

From the town of Tlapacoyan, take the Federal Highway towards Plan de Arroyos to the settlement of Santiago. From here cross a hill on foot in the direction of the river. From the archeological zone of Vega de la Peña you can also reach Cuajilote on foot, as they are only 2.5 km apart.
