The Augustinian order’s fifth monastery in Michoacan, was built very much like a fortress in 1550. It was a center for evangelizing the Tarascans and for training priests for this work. This great building was notable for the great masters and pupils who lived and worked here. Restored to its grandeur, it houses exhibitions on the art of printing.

Shows the development of the Tarascan capital and its inhabitants who were notable silver and goldsmiths, potters, unvanquished warriors and builders of yacatas (round based temples). A glimpse of the religion, wars and working lives of these town dwellers.

The San Nicolás Obispo College, built for Vasco de Quiroga and opened in 1540, displays the wonderful handcrafts of Michoacan which include: pottery, copper, stone and wooden crafts, lacquerware from Uruapan and Quiroga, Patzcuaro-style guilding, backstrap weaving, treadle loom weaving and embroidery.

First established in 1886 in a palace in the city of Morelia, the museum houses a splendid collection of pre-Hispanic artefacts, assembled by the institution’s first director, Nicolás León, as well as plates of rare codices, maps, ancient items of clothing and objects of historic importance such as the table where the Constitution of Apatzingán was signed.

The house that José María Morelos bought in 1801, in Valladolid (Morelia), for his sister to live in, houses a magnificent museum about his life and his role in the War of Independence, as well as the archives of two million documents from the Bishopric and Government of Michoacan.
