Sala Introductoria de la Zona Arqueológica de Tenam Puente
An extensive exhibition introduces the visitor to the majestic site of Tenam Puente. The photographic collection and the archeologists’ plans explain the grandeur of this Maya site and its buildings, stairways, embankments and temples.
About the museum
The introductory gallery to the Tenam Puente archeological site has a display area of nearly 400 square feet. Tenam comes from the Nahuatl "tenamitl," which means “fortified place.” The second name came from the ancient El Puente farm, which occupied the center of what is now the ejido of Francisco Sarabia. Tenam Puente has complexes of mounds on the top of the hills.
The museum displays photographs of some of the site’s important finds, as well as a topographical map of the Acropolis showing the main buildings. There is also a stela which shows a battle scene in which one person is capturing another. We can also see photographs and a brief description of the pilgrimage of the Heart of the Virgin Mary, which the ejido members of Francisco Sarabia make to the highest section of the Acropolis. This is a movable feast celebrated in August.

Leaving the town of Comitan, take federal highway 190 (the Panamericana) in the direction of La Trinitaria. After five miles, take the turn that leads to the community of Francisco Sarabia. When you reach this point, continue towards Uninajab for one mile until you reach the site. The route is fully paved.
