The ritual of the ball game in Tenochtitlan

This exhibition aims to introduce visitors to the ball game in Tenochtitlan, presenting it not only as a recreational activity but also as a central element in the social and religious life of the Mexica and within the broader context of Mesoamerican societies.

The tour will begin with an introduction to the ballgame in Mesoamerica, considering its wide geographical and temporal distribution, as well as the diversity of its variants. This section explains what the ballgame is, the contexts in which it developed, and the main interpretations of its symbolism: a representation of the movement of the stars, war, and the constant battle between diurnal and nocturnal deities. It also highlights its connection to agricultural cycles, time, and ritual practices associated with sacrifice, decapitation, and fertility.

Subsequently, the exhibition will focus on the ballgame within the Sacred Precinct of Tenochtitlan, with special emphasis on the Teotlachco. Archaeological evidence and references in historical sources will be presented, allowing for the location and characterization of the ball courts within the city. Additionally, the myth of the birth of Huitzilopochtli will be incorporated as a key element for understanding the relationship between the ball game, war, and decapitation in Mexica thought.

The exhibition will also include a comparative reference to the ball game in another context: Tula. Finally, it will explore the continuity of the practice from the arrival of the Spanish to the present day, including references from the colonial era in chronicles that recount the arrival of ball players at the Spanish court. Lastly, it will mention contemporary manifestations or practices of the ball game.

Admission to the Templo Mayor archaeological site and museum costs 105 pesos. Children under 13, students and teachers with valid ID, seniors with valid ID, and people with disabilities are admitted free of charge. On Sundays, admission is free for Mexican nationals and foreign residents.
